FAQs

What is Defying Gravity?
Defying Gravity is a strategic churchwide plan to teach biblical stewardship, so we can manage our lives and money God’s way.

What is biblical stewardship?
Stewardship is managing God’s blessings, God’s ways, for God’s glory.

What is Financial Peace University?
Financial Peace University is a 9-week course taught by America's most trusted financial advisor, Dave Ramsey. Dave and his teaching team will walk you through the basics of budgeting, dumping debt, planning for the future, and much more.

Is there a cost?
We are able to offer annual memberships for $80 per household. We guarantee that the investment will be worthwhile. Many of us can cover this cost, but don’t let cost be the barrier that stops you. Reach out to us and we'd be happy to start the conversation around how to get you a membership.

Do you offer scholarships?
Our heart is to bless as many people as possible. Our scholarships are made available through the donations of our congregation. As a result, there are a limited number of scholarships available. You can request a scholarship by completing our scholarship form

What will I learn?
At FPU you’ll get your questions answered by Dave Ramsey, his team, and trained facilitators on a wide range of topics;

  • Budgeting, saving, and paying off debt
  • How to get on the same page with your spouse when it comes to money (yes, it’s possible!)
  • Identifying which types of insurance are best for you
  • Planning and saving for major expenses
  • Investing in your future, giving generously, and more

What happens in an FPU Group?
Some FPU Groups meet in homes and others meet on-site across our locations.Regardless of where you meet, our time is centered around discussion. We’ll watch a 50-minute video lesson where Dave Ramsey will walk us through the basics of budgeting, dumping debt, planning for the future, and much more. We'll wrap up with a group discussion, Q&A, and celebration of people who are taking their next step. Each week there will be homework to keep you engaged in the journey during the week.

Will I have to share my financial situation with others?
You will not have to share any of your personal information; all of your personal information is confidential. The program teaches you to compile your own personal financial spending records and to manage your own budget. You learn step by step methods to develop a strategy to fit your situation. There are financial counselors available if you want to seek personalized counsel, but you are not asked to divulge personal financial information while taking the course.

When will I get my materials?
We will distribute workbooks to home group leaders in advance so they have them for your first session. Campus groups will receive their workbooks at their first session. Online membership access information will also be provided at the first session.

When is this happening?
Groups launch the week of September 15th and run through mid-November. We will offer multiple options during the week to fit everyone’s schedules.

What if I have a conflict in my schedule?
We know that life is busy, so we’ve worked hard to accommodate just about every schedule imaginable. Look over the options; we’re confident we have something to fit your unique rhythm. If you can’t commit to come consistently over all 9 weeks, it’s not a problem. At each location we have multiple options. You can jump into the class that best fits your schedule for that particular week.

Is there anything for my kids?
During the Defying Gravity series kids through adults will spend time learning how to wisely handle finances. During the 9-week Financial Peace University groups, many of our offerings will have free childcare available. Check out the class options to see what options are available for you. For our middle school and high school students, we’re offering a special FPU option that will break down these principles on their level.

What is in it for HCBC?
Our only goal for FPU is to help every person in our church live a life set free. We believe that if we learn to apply the principles taught through FPU we'll be on our way to living a life marked by peace and margin. We believe so strongly that this will help you that we’re investing our resources to make this as accessible as possible.

Why is the church aligning all ministries during this time?
Focus matters! We all live very busy lives and adding more to the schedule wouldn’t help. Therefore, we’ve simplified the church’s calendar to make these nine weeks more accessible. We believe by taking the majority of our church through this transformational process, we will see our entire church transformed. Putting a pause in our normal church programming encourages us to have a unified focus and demonstrates the high value we place on this teaching. Becoming good managers of our resources is a fundamental building block that is critical for living a life set free, and we want everyone to experience that freedom!

What if I have already taken FPU?
Then you’re in a great position to serve others by leading! See “How Can I Help?” below. Additionally, FPU Alumni can attend for no cost. If you would like the updated material (workbook and online resources) you can simply register for $80 or purchase a workbook for $10 by emailing [email protected]. If you have questions related to your FPU membership, please contact [email protected].

How can I help?
We are passionate about helping every household at HCBC learn to be responsible managers of what God has entrusted to them. This fall we will need hundreds of volunteers to help us create an amazing FPU experience. If you would like to serve as an FPU volunteer, we'd love to hear from you! Complete this form.

How can I pay it forward?
If you want to help others better understand biblical stewardship, consider giving a gift to our scholarship fund. We are working to remove financial barriers so that we can see everyone at our church defy gravity! Click here to gift a scholarship and including  “FPU Scholarship” in the memo.
